Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) (Psetta maxima) is a beautiful flatfish, which is often called ‘king of the sea’. This fish can reach a length of one meter and weight between 25 and 30 kg. Turbot can reach an age of 25 years. It has a round asymmetrical bodyshape and the eyes are located at the top of the head, just next to each other.
Wild environment
Turbot is a marine species and lives in marine and brakish water. The area of distribution is from the Mediterranean towards the Norway waters and the Atlantic Ocean. The optimal temperature for turbot is around 16 untill 18 degrees Celsius. It is a real predator, which has shellfish, fish and crustaceans on his menu. Turbot catch their prey from their shelter in the sandy seafloor. Besides hiding, they can easily change colours and camouflage their bodies.
Culture environment
Turbot at our farm is cultured in a Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS), see company description. Maintaining water quality in the farm is very important for the health and welfare of the fish. The fish is grown in our farm from around 10 g to a maximum of 2 – 3 kg in 18 – 24 months. In circular bassins with a surface over 35 square meter the fish is kept and regurarly graded. This is important for the welfare and performance of the fish. The feed we provide with an automatic feeding system, they receive three or four times a day an automaticly calculated amount of feed.
Quietness, Regularity and Purity are three main keywords for culturing fish.
